Domaine Motz
About the Motz Brothers
During D'Summer Fascht in Strasbourg in July 2022, we meet brothers Florent & Nicolas Motz, two brothers who come from a family of winegrowers from Bernardswiller (Alsace). The Motz family has been making aptly named Alsace wines since 1808 and is officially certified organic. This family's estate is located south of Strasbourg and spans several areas around the town of Bernardswiller.
Florent & Nicolas have been given the opportunity by their parents to create a range of all-natural wines, and the talent shines through! Currently, the brothers are working with organically grown Sylvaner, Muscat, Pinot Noir, Auxerrois, Pinot Blanc and Gewurztraminer. In the future, they hope to expand this to include more typical Alsatian grape varieties, such as Riesling and Pinot Gris.
Although the brothers have only been producing their own wine for a few years, their wines clearly reflect the terroir of the Motz family estate! For example, the variety of soil types and the relatively warm and dry climate create expressive, mineral wines. This is enhanced by a nurtured and protected ecosystem, as the soils of the vineyards are planted with oats, clover, phacelia and radishes. Most work in the vineyard is done by hand to be precise and limit soil degradation. The immune defenses of the vines are strengthened thanks to nettle, horsetail and sedge, among other things.
All grapes are harvested and sorted manually by Florent and Nicolas. In the vinification process, natural yeasts then allow the grape must to be transformed into wine over a period of two to six months. Fermentation is followed by the period of aging in hundred-year-old oak barrels. No sulfite is added during bottling to fully ensure the expression of the grapes and terroir. The result is already amazing! We look forward immensely to the development of winemaking from these insanely talented brothers!
