for you among them. Our orange wine selection currently focuses mainly on France, Italy and Austria, but this will continue to expand.

Orange wine is of course very much on the rise in recent years, but generally in the Netherlands still a lot less known than red, white and rosé wine. This is actually a shame, because orange wine is a very special kind of wine. The wine has a complex flavor profile, which cannot really be compared to other types of wine. Not to mention its beautiful orange-yellow or amber color. The wine is originally from Georgia, but it is now made and drunk in many more places. Are you also curious about this special orange wine? At Aardig Wijntje, we have some great wines for you in our selection.

How is orange wine made?

Orange wine owes its special taste and color to the fermentation process. Orange wine is made from white grapes, but is fermented like red wine. This means that the solid particles, such as pigeon skins and seeds, are not separated directly from the juice. This long skin soaking or maceration gives the orange wine its particularly complex flavor profile and beautiful color. The result can vary enormously based on the duration of maceration: from firm, tannic wines to remarkably fresh wines. Traditionally, orange wine was made and stored in special earthenware jars (amphora). This is not always done today, although there are certainly still winemakers who maintain this tradition. The earthenware jugs then contribute to the special taste of the orange wine.

Orange natural wine with little or no sulfite

Orange wine is often made as naturally as possible. Not surprisingly, there are many orange natural wines. With natural wine, the winegrower works organically or biodynamically and intervenes as little as possible during vinification. This means that no additives are added to the wine, allowing it to retain an intense, natural flavor. The only substance that is sometimes added is sulfite, but even that is done as little as possible. With natural wine, the terroir and quality of the grapes used play a very large role in the taste of the final product. No chemical pesticides are used in the vineyard and the grapes are mostly picked by hand.
