A few of these grape varieties are typical of the Jura wine region. The Savagnin grape is a golden yellow grape with occasional amber flecks. It is a demanding grape variety that ripens slowly. Savagnin Blanc is the basis of the special yellow Jura wine. This wine is made in a special way. In this process, the wine barrel is only partially filled and is not refilled. This is called ageing without ouillage. This gives the wine a thin film of yeast cells, also called a "voile. This voile protects the wine from oxidation. This results in powerful white wines with complex aromas. Another typical grape variety from the Jura is the Poulsard. This grape has a red skin and white flesh. This special grape is vinified as a light red wine.

Other wines from the Jura wine region

Although the Poulsard and Savagnin grape are both very typical of the Jura area, together they make up less than 30% of the total plantings in the wine region. The Chardonnay alone accounts for 45% of plantings. This grape produces exceptional floral wines. The Trousseau grape accounts for 8% of plantings. This is a demanding grape variety with aromas including black fruit and coffee. The Pinot Noir grape is also grown in the Jura. This grape often ripens here first and has aromas of strawberries, crabapples and blackberries.
