Red natural wine, biodynamic wine or organic wine
Red wine can be made in various ways. Always blue grapes are the basis of this wine, but the way of growing grapes and vinification differ. In conventional wine, every effort is made to make the wine as good and stable as possible. This means that pesticides and fertilizers are used on the vineyard, among other things, but also that all kinds of additives may be added to the wine during vinification.
Organic red wine does not use pesticides or fertilizers on the vineyard. Biodynamic viticulture also abides by these rules, but goes one step further. Biodynamic winemakers take into account the position of the sun and moon, for example, and use mixtures of herbs to keep their vineyard healthy. Additives are allowed during vinification in both biodynamic and organic wine. Official certifications have been released for both organic and biodynamic wine, by which you can identify the wine.
With red natural wine, this is not the case. Although there are some regulations that natural wine must meet, this is not actually checked. In general, the blue grapes for red natural wine must be grown organically or biodynamically. They are picked by hand and nothing may be added to the wine during vinification. This means that the taste of the red natural wine cannot be affected with chemical additives. The only exception is the addition of sulfite, as it is used as a preservative. Red natural wine may contain a low concentration of sulfite, although there is also red wine without sulfite. However, the amount of sulfite that may be added to natural wine is many times lower than that added to conventional wine or even organic or biodynamic wine.
