Italian wines are loved by many people. Wines from the regions of Tuscany, Puglia, Sicily and Umbria are widely consumed. Italy has many indigenous grape varieties, so the diversity of Italian wines is very large. In recent years, Italian natural wines have also become increasingly popular. With natural wine, the producer interferes as little as possible with the natural process. This results in flavorful, complex, rich, but also supple wines.


What makes natural wine special?

The grapes for natural wine are grown organically or biodynamically. This means that the winemaker does not use artificial fertilizers, pesticides or other chemical additives on the vineyard. On a biodynamic vineyard, "cosmic forces," such as the position of the sun and moon, are also taken into account. But whereas organic or biodynamic wine still uses additives during the winemaking process, this is different with natural wine. With natural wine, no additives may be added. This means that no yeasts may be added, but also that, for example, acids that influence the taste are not allowed. As a result, natural wine remains a very pure product. The only exception is sulfite. This may be added to natural wine in small amounts, although many winemakers choose not to.


Where is Italian natural wine made?

Italy has many different wine regions, each with its own specialties. Natural wine is also made in these regions. Often this is done on small vineyards and in small batches. Italian natural wine is therefore less well known than conventional or even organic wine. Nevertheless, from (almost) all known Italian wine regions also come natural wines. From Piedmont to Abruzzo and from Campania to Marche. Even in the very popular, but traditional Barolo region, many winemakers are working biodynamically. Natural wine, even more than other types of wine, is subject to flavor change from year to year. Because of this, the quality of the grapes is very important.
