What exactly is natural wine?

Natural wines are wines where as little is intervened as possible from the vineyard to the bottle, made the way wine was made for thousands of years before the industrial revolution. This means:
Healthy grapes, grown organically or biodynamically;
No chemical additives;
No or hardly any added sulfite;
Spontaneous fermentation;
No filtering after the fermentation process.
By the way, many winemakers are not very happy with the term natural wine because the word can be twisted in all sorts of directions. And yes, it's actually also a shame that the adjective "nature" has to be added to the word "wine," when the original definition of wine is pure, fermented grape juice. Regardless, it is the most commonly used name worldwide to describe healthily grown, nature-friendly wines with little intervention.

Natural wine, organic wine and biodynamic wine: what's the difference?

When buying natural wine, you will encounter several terms. Therefore, it is important to know the difference between natural wine, organic wine and biodynamic wine. Organic wine is made from organically grown grapes. This means that winemakers do not use herbicides or pesticides on the vineyard. Thus, chemical pesticides and fertilizers cannot be used in this type of viticulture. Biodynamic winemakers also follow these rules, but go a step further. They use homeopathic herbal mixtures to make the soil and the vine as healthy as possible. They also take into account "cosmic forces. This means they align their operations with the position of the sun and moon. The fermentation of both organic and biodynamic wine does involve additives, such as yeasts. This is the major difference from natural wines. These grapes are grown organically or biodynamically, they are picked by hand and there is no intervention during fermentation. Here the winemaker lets nature take its course as much as possible.

What does natural wine taste like?

When making natural wine, the winemaker does not intervene. This means that no yeasts, dyes or acids are added, but also that the wine is filtered as little as possible. However, sulfite may be added (in moderation), as it positively affects the wine's shelf life. But there are also natural wines without sulfite. Because the winemaker lets nature take its course, it is not possible to say in advance with complete certainty what the taste of the natural wine will be. Different vintages of the same natural wine therefore also taste different. This is one of the great charms of natural wines. Natural wine, especially compared to many other wines, is a real taste explosion. It is precisely because no substances have been added to influence the taste that you taste the intense wine flavor. That makes each glass a beautiful voyage of discovery.

Pet nat: natural wine with a bubble

Do you like to drink sparkling wine? Then there are suitable natural wines for you as well. Pet nat, or pétillant naturel, is wine that becomes sparkling naturally. Fermentation takes place through the natural method "méthode ancestrale. Here, no additives are added to the unfiltered wine, but the natural fermentation process is followed. Thus, the sparkling wine remains completely natural, unlike, for example, champagne where two controlled fermentation processes.
